Our Story

The Athletes Academy was created as a safe haven for young athletes that have a passion to succeed both on and off the field. At the Athletes Academy students are given an opportunity to excel in a unique style of training, one that encapsulates their natural athletic abilities while enhancing their scholarship in academics.

The Athletes Academy got its start when Mike and Kelsey Stuart realized that their four boys, each in year-around sports, struggled to keep up with the grueling training routines and managing the traditional school schedule.

Tournaments often took them out on Monday’s or Friday’s from classes and the make-up work began to pile up. Academics became a chore no one looked forward to.

As college instructors, the Stuart’s knew that their boys were going to have to soon master time manangment skills if they wanted to become student athletes at the collegiate level.

Homeschooling started and as the years went on the schedules began to adapt to the learning speed and retention of the boys. It was in their third year of homeschooling that the idea of HIIT for Academics was initiated. This unique blend of assessment in movement, heightens kinesthetic learning and offers an incredible outlet for active learners.

Realizing they had found the secret playbook for success in retention and engagement with young athletes, the Stuart’s decided to open up their training programs for the entire community of up and coming student athletes.

"Each year I have players that are coming back from D1 and D2 scholarships to enroll at Moorpark College. These are very talented athletes, but many of them are struggling to navigate the intense schedule of being a student athlete. We came up with the Athletes Academy to help guide that transition to a collegiate student athlete. Our goal is to create a foundation of time managment skills, passionate learners and active citizens, so that when these young athletes get to that next level they are as comfortable in a classroom as they are on a field.”

— Mike Stuart, Moorpark College Head FB Coach

The idea of imitating a workout schedule with an academic one, became a challenge that even the heartiest refuser of ‘school’ was hard to ignore. With a specific emphasis on block scheduling, but with a fusion of HIIT for lecture, assessments and engagement, the Athletes Academy blends the perfect fusion of movement and memory to guarantee retention.

Athletes are often shackled with the stereotypes that range from over-active to incapable when it comes to academics. After coaching young athletes for the last 15 years, the Stuart’s were determined to prove those stereotypes wrong.

At the Athletes Academy, student athletes are offered a playbook that enhances all the needed skill sets to meet academics with the same vigor and confidence they display on the field.

About

It all started when…

We began tutoring student athletes at Moorpark College and quickly realized that although able to memorize and execute hundreds of football plays, the athletes were struggling with that level of confidence and output in a classroom setting.

As our sons grew older, we began to realize a similar trend.

The hustle happened only when it was related to sports.

We decided it was time to revamp the playbook a bit.

HIIT for Academics

High Intensity Interval Training is a well known term for most athletes. The idea of going hard for a brief break is a standard practice to help build endurance.

The Athletes Academy uses this endurance building to help navigate both the lecture and assessment stages of subjects. Using a sport training atmosphere the Athletes Academy instills an immediate competitive air, while awarding movement and individual learning in its student athletes.

HIIT for Academics offers a chance for young athletes to build back their confidence in academics by applying the idea of kinesthetic competition with retention and application.

The Athletes Academy uses HIIT for Academics on a block subject schedule.

In traditional homeschool style, the courses are not based on grade level, but rather age groupings.

Just as each athlete will develop skill sets at different time periods, so will they as students. Age grouping allows for strengths to build and growth to occur, oftentimes opening doors for leadership and mentorship opportunities.

At the Athlete’s Academy student athletes are exposed to professional training schedules that are currently implemented at the D1 level of sports. The skill sets and daily routines they will become ingrained with at the Athletes Academy, will pave the way for successful time managment routines, professional work ethic, and confidence in the classroom.

Each HIIT Academic Session is paired with a conditioning, strength training and stretching session broken up throughout the day.

Student athletes complete a HIIT for Academics lecture followed by a hands on application of the material.

Student Athletes engage in Life Skills courses that include cooking competitions.

Schedule

Physical Training/Conditioning

Our program offers an intense focus on physical training intermingled throughout the day in two segments. Our first session launches in the morning as a cardio/bootcamp style workout located outside or in a gym with a focus on pushing personal bests. The morning conditioning helps to instill a focused energy in our student athletes that will help with retention for the remainder of the day. Our second conditioning takes place after the Life Skill and is usually a group obstacle or timed training, paired with stretching session. The physical activity will vary in theme but will maintain personal records and monthly goals.

Core & Elective Lessons: Math, English, Digital Communications, and Health & Wellness

A specialized personally designed curriculum themed on enhancing student confidence in writing & communications and fine tuning their understanding of Reading, Writing & Arithmetic.

Our lesson and lecture session is what makes our program such a unique blend of instruction and retention. We will spend 30 minutes going over a lesson that is broken down into five main points. The lessons will be given to the students directly after their water break in the morning. The lessons will vary by subject and day, but will all follow the HIIT for Academics style schedule with one point focused on for five minutes with a one minute break. The one minute break allows the student athletes to acknowledge a rest period and help them to prioritize retaining material in those five minutes.
